Highland Park was officially incorporated in 1915 after it was refused annexation from Dallas. What began in 1889 as an exclusive housing area modeled after parkland housing in Philadelphia became one of the first completely planned cities in Texas. John Armstrong purchased the land from Henry Exall in 1906 and named the area Highland Park. Two landscape architects, Wilbur David Cook and George E. Kessler, were hired to design the layout and help with planning and development. Highland Park is known for its quality housing and many parks running along Turtle Creek and by the Dallas Country Club, which is located in Highland Park.

Students in Highland Park attend schools within the highly acclaimed Highland Park Independent School District. Highland Park High School students' 2001 SAT composite scores surpassed the state and national averages.

Highland Park Village is host to the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, Wine and Food Festivals, Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides and other community celebrations that provide family and community fun for resident families and visitors alike.

Mild temperatures and plenty of land make golf a popular recreational activity in this part of Texas. In the Dallas area alone there are 20 public and private courses, some with surrounding residential communities. Water sports are also popular in the many area lakes. Residents of the Park Cities enjoy professional sports at their highest levels via the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers and the Texas Motor Speedway.

Park City area residents are a few short minutes away from all the big-city culture and recreation that Dallas has to offer. The Dallas/Fort Worth area is expected to lead the nation in employment growth for the next several years, creating nearly 500,000 jobs. With attractions such as the Dallas Zoo, Museum of Natural History, Museum of Art, and the Dallas Opera and Symphony, locals have access to and enjoy a wide range of entertainment and activities. And while there are plenty of fine dining options in the Village and Snider Plaza, Dallas also offers some of the best restaurants in the country.
